Bringing Art, Beauty, and Community to Ellensburg
In the heart of Ellensburg, Washington, artist Erin Oostra is transforming the community through murals, paintings, and interactive public art projects that bring beauty and connection to the Kittitas Valley. Since moving to Ellensburg in 2020, Erin has been inspired by the sunshine, the mountains, and the quiet charm of this part of the state, where meaningful connections and creative energy thrive.
Why Ellensburg Inspires Erin Oostra
“I moved here for the sunshine and to be close to the mountains I love to paint,” Erin shares. “I appreciate the quiet beauty of this side of the state, where there are fewer people and more meaningful connections. It’s the perfect place to live, create, and connect with the community.”
Erin’s artistic journey began in graphic design, working for companies like Nordstrom, Picmonkey, and Shutterstock. Over time, painting became her true passion. She focuses on contemporary landscapes and abstract works inspired by the Pacific Northwest. “I love sharing beauty with people, whether it’s on a hike or adventure I lead, or through a painting I create after an experience outdoors,” she says.
Using Art to Give Back
Community is at the heart of Erin’s work. She has volunteered countless hours with the Ellensburg Arts Commission and the EDA Design Committee, and has donated numerous paintings and funds to local nonprofits including the Downtown Association and Habitat for Humanity.
Through Nuwave Gallery, which she co-owns with Fortuity Cellars, Erin hosts art shows, fundraisers, and community programs that support local causes. “If I can use my art to improve my community, then I am using my gift for good,” Erin explains. “That is something I’m proud of.”
The Power of Public Art
Erin believes public art transforms spaces. Murals and shared art projects make creativity accessible and inspire emotions that make moments and places memorable. “Many people don’t realize the importance of art until they experience it themselves. It helps beautify the world, inspire others positively, and leave every space better than you found it,” she says. Public art also introduces her work to a broader audience, helping people discover her private collection pieces while enriching the downtown experience.
Collaboration and Community Connections
Collaboration is central to Erin’s work. One of her main artistic collaborators in Ellensburg is Kyle Krauskopf, another local artist dedicated to giving back to the community. Erin is always seeking ways to support other artists. “There are so many talented people around, and working together strengthens both the work and the connections between artists and the community,” she says.
Every project Erin undertakes begins with careful thought about the space and its environment. She balances her creative vision with the needs of the space, ensuring each piece creates harmony, complements its surroundings, and enhances the experience for viewers.
First Friday Art Walks: Get Involved
Erin hopes her art sparks joy, curiosity, and moments of reflection for anyone who sees it in downtown Ellensburg. She also emphasizes the importance of supporting local artists. “Every visit to a gallery, conversation about a piece, or purchase helps our creative community thrive,” Erin notes.
A perfect example of her community focus is the upcoming March and April First Friday Art Walks at Nuwave Gallery. Erin is creating public artworks that anyone can contribute to, and these murals will eventually be donated to downtown Ellensburg. Residents and visitors will have the chance to leave their own mark, creating a shared experience and strengthening community connections. Everyone is invited to participate and be part of Ellensburg’s growing creative story.
